Music Project: Deities of Paraśurāma Kalpasūtra

Published: December 14, 2024

On the occasion of Dattatreya Jayanti, we are releasing recordings of the Dhyānas (verses describing the forms of deities) of the principal Śrīvidyā deities of the Paraśurāma Kalpasūtra (PKS) deity maṇḍala which are made to accompany our art publication depicting the same deities. We have also updated our publication with additional edits to correspond with the release of these audios, so please download the new release of the document.

Featured deities include Mahāgaṇapati, Lalitā Tripurasundarī and her aṅga devatās, Sampatkarī, Rājaśyāmalā and her aṅga devatās, Mahāvārāhī and her aṅga devatās, and Parā.

The first recording is a recitation going through each Viniyogah and Dhyāna in the document. There are also individual recordings for each Dhyāna, in which they are each rendered in three different melodies. These Dhyānas not only describe the forms of the deities, but are also in themselves beautiful poetic pieces composed in classical sanskrit meters (Chandas). We hope these recordings together with the publication and drawings will help bring out the beauty of the meaning, meter and form of the deities all together.

This offering is an expression of the spiritual and artistic beauty that pervades the sanskrit tradition as a whole, and Srī Vidyā in particular.

A small selection of the recordings is embedded on this page, to view the full playlist of all recordings on YouTube click the link below.

Our collaborator

We are deeply grateful to Nityananda Dasa for his expert rendering of these verses, in which he has woven together clear pronunciation and expression of the rhythm of the meters with beautiful and varied melodies.

You can also support him and his music by purchasing the album of these recordings on his bandcamp page – Album on Nityananda Dasa’s Band Camp.
